Luke 8: Growing Out

“A farmer went out to sow his seed…” (Luke 8:5)

Do you remember planting seeds in a styrofoam cup and waiting for a plant to grow? It was such an exciting thing to see a small bulge in the dirt and then, eventually, a tiny green stalk breakthrough the surface. With the proper care, the plant would continue to grow to the point of needing to be moved out of the cup or it would stop growing altogether.

In this parable, Jesus mentions that the farmer “went out” to plant seeds. That in order to have the space and place to grow, the farmer needed to go out. It is here that plants can take root and grow, outside the styrofoam walls where the Church they belong.

May we move outside our comfortable ecosystems and may we realize real growth happens there.
