Luke 5: Deep Water

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. (Luke 5:4-7)

Jesus asked them to go where they didn’t want to go. They were tired and wanted to call it a night but because it was Jesus, they went. They pulled in more fish than they ever had from a single cast.

The “deep water” can be an uncomfortable place for many of us. Some of us have been there before; tried, failed, and gotten so tired we left. Perhaps Jesus is calling you back into the “deep waters.”

I’m not sure where that might be for you but it just might be a place where he wants to use you to connect with a lot of people, or just one. As you venture into the deep, remember these 2 things: 1) Only go because Jesus calls you to go and 2) like the fishermen, don’t go alone.
